The Hummingbird

The sunlight glinted off the silvery wings of the Hummingbird, as its head dipped down into the flower, searching for the nectar inside. Within seconds, it was above another flower, its thin golden beak darting in and out, dripping with the oily syrup from deep within the plant's metallic stem. High above, the great tree branches spread along and against the glass roof, causing the light to dapple and seep across the garden below.

Overhead, almost obscured by the heavy black clouds, the vast, inter-continental transports crisscrossed the sky, their shadows no match for the artificial light filtering through the garden.

Then, with the sound like air escaping a canister, the sprinkler system began. A fine mist of oil covered the flowers, creating a rainbow of colours in the sunlight. The Hummingbird continued on its nectar hunt, unbothered by the liquid now coating his silvery wings and seeping in between the joints.
